More on the joys of eating locally...

We made a salad with vegetables from the garden.

My mom had to pick me up at the airport at 2am and barely got any sleep last night. Even though I saw her put the lettuce in the strainer, I had a suspicion that she didn't wash it as thoroughly as I might have. Tired, perhaps? But, no matter... It's just lettuce.

But then, as I was eating another course, from the corner of my eye I noticed something crawling its way over the lip of my salad bowl. By the time I'd fetched the camera, my dinner companion had made it a few inches across the table and acquired a sizable fan club.

(In case you are wondering, in compliance with my mother's "organic" pest control methods, he was gently tossed into the neighbor's yard.)
