Well, what always annoys me during election year is how people take
an all-or-none stance to support one candidate/party against another.
How can I vote for McCain, but then Obama is not liberal either.
Today's article in the NYTimes should drive that home. Obama is a
big supporter of ethanol as a "sustainable" fuel.
Ethanol fuel is dumb! Just because it has some association with a
plant doesn't make it green. Ethanol produces the same amount of
greenhouse gases when burned. And, ethanol from corn grown in the
MidWest is made from fossil fuels as well. It's made only by adding
tons of chemically synthesized fertilizer (burning crude oil) because
the land is so devoid of any nutrients any more. It's probably less
efficient than just burning the fossil fuel oil directly than adding
in a bunch of intermediary steps.
Anyway, McCain isn't going around promoting public transportation,
bicycles, and sustainable agricultural practices either. But, at
least he hates the farm (corn) subsidies as much as I do.
